The inscription research facility of Greifswald was established in May 2002 by the academy of science Goettingen in a co-operation with the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Universtiy Greifswald. Its prime task is to collect and publish the inscriptions of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania up to the year 1650. The current central concern of the facility is centered upon the inscriptions of the larger Hanseatic-League cities and university cities. The first volume to be published was "Die Inschriften der Stadt Greifswald", collected and editded by Juergen Herold and Christine Margin. At present the central endeavor is the publishing of the inscription stocks of the Hanseatic-League and world culture heritage cities Stralsund (Christine Magin) and Wismar (Juergen Herold). Alongside the gradual in depth-recording of the inscriptions of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania into an internal data-base takes place.
